The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is a public university in Greensboro, which is a city in the US state of North Carolina, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 258 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, fact which makes it the 3rd largest city, by population, in the state, as well as the largest city in Guilford County and the surrounding Piedmont Triad metropolitan region.
More commonly referred to as simply UNCG, the university was established as the State Normal and Industrial School, in February, 1891, being opened in October, one year later. The institution adopted its current name in 1963, when men were first admitted, to better reflect its mission, after being known by various names, over the years: State Normal and Industrial College (1896), North Carolina College for Women (1919) and Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (1932).
Today, UNCG is recognized as being one of the most renowned universities in the state, offering its students over 100 undergraduate, 22 doctoral programs and 59 master’s, its academic schools and programs, including: Business & Economics, Health & Human Performance, Nursing, Music, Graduate School and Lloyd International Honors College, the Bryan School of Business and Economics being the largest of the university’s 6 professional schools.
The institution’s athletic teams are known as the UNC Greensboro Spartans, who compete in NCAA Division I, in 18 sports, including in soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. The Spartans have experienced success in many of their sports, including in men’s soccer, the men’s soccer team being ranked No.1 in the country for 11 weeks, in 2004, as well as in men’s basketball, in which in ’96, they defeated Liberty, claimed the Big South Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in Division I.
Among the most resonant names on the list of UNCG notable alumni, there are: Claudia Emerson – Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Emmylou Harris – Grammy-winning Country music/folk singer-songwriter, Beth Leavel – Tony Award-winning Broadway actress, Keith Lee Morris – Author of "The Dart League King", "The Greyhound God", and "The Best Seats in the House", Carol Mann- LPGA Hall of Fame golfer, and Steve Almond – Author of Candyfreak, "My Life in Heavy Metal" and "The Evil B.B.
